Just a great cover, what more can I say?

Spring is here, which means it’s time to ramp up the acquisition machine and seek out new finds for y’all. Really! Well, I have been gathering (and hunting, as is my wont) but not posting of late. So. without further ado, here’s one of the cool ones I’ve uncovered at a local Goodwill:

It pays to have a good eye and a little horse sense. I’ve been scouting out odd soundtracks and this caught my eye. Produced by John Simon for Peter Yarrow’s “rockumentary” You Are What You Eat. An interesting period piece, for sure, mostly notable for featuring a) the first recording of Tiny Tim and b) the last recording of the Hawks before they changed their name and became the Band. Even more notable? The Hawks are backing up Tiny Tim.

Okay, sue me. After August the flea market scene dries up in Rochester and the kids are back in school… so this blog is a little stale. Plus, my computer was literally dying! From a recent trip tothe House of Guitars. The Great, Great House of Guitars. Really, if you’re not from Rochester, you probably don’t know what the HOG is. But it IS a landmark, and well worth visiting if you’ve never been here. Ranger Bob? Only one of the most incredible Rochester TV personalities on UHF in the eighties!

Now that summer is offically over (as far as the kids are concerned), it’s official! The weather in upstate NY sucked! It also was not kind to the folks who drag their ephemera to the open air flea markets. I tried to visit as many flea markets as possible this summer, weather permitting Here are some highlights from my end-of-summer visits:

Woodshop Dano

MAN! I really was curious about this project guitar… pretty crude home-made Danolectro style guitar, right down to the lipstick pickup. Looks like the type of guitar the Professor would make from Coconut Shells on Gilligan’s Island. I hope the luthier got an “A” in woodshop for this axe.

Teisco Prestige

Vintage Teisco Prestige with home-made bridge. I wanted to ask the vendor how much they wanted for this guitar, but they were too busy yukking it up with their fellow vendors.

used to collect 70′s silver hi-fi; a snap or two now fills that need. Cool J.C. Penny MCS receiver made by Panasonic (Technics).

Old School Sony Silver Hi-Fi

When I asked the vendor about the specs for this unit, he made up some numbers. Rule #1, wattage is NEVER what a vendor claims.Cool piece, though. In a weakened state (only one cup of coffee), I was almost tempted to purchase.

Everybody knows that Canada gave us Rush… but did you know that our neighbor to the north also gave us Rushnychok? Here’s a shot of the album cover for their elpee “Four.” Dig those capes!

Rushnychok - The Ukranian Beatles

from: Ukranian Music In Montreal: “Rushnychok – Compromising of four male singers, accompanied by electric guitars, percussion and accordion, was the first “Beatle-type” group to perform at zabavas. The accordion has a special place and preserves a traditional flavour in dance pieces such as waltzes, tangos, rhumbas, fox-trots, hopaks and other Ukrainian dances. The more contemporary pieces in the Anglo-American style are dominated by guitars and percussion. The tonality of the voices is anglicized, yet the harmony remains traditional and the tempos, dynamic and rapid. Finally, the rhythmic effects are emphasized by accentuated off-beat rhythms (characteristic of certain Ukrainian dances).”

I find the truth sometimes bizarrely incredible… and so does Robert Tralins. All I know is that, if I get lost somewhere out in the country, I hope I run into the “do-gooder ghost of the back woods.” Beats Leatherface any old day!

The White Sisters were a gospel trio from Maryland that recorded 8 albums of sacred gospel music on the Word Records label during the 1960’s.  They started out as a secular music act but switched to gospel music after attending vacation bible school.
